COVID-19 just took your seat at the gym.
Converse County School District #1 has announced that, due to the pandemic and updated state and Wyoming High School Activities Association requirements, Douglas High School and Douglas Middle School athletic and activity events will not be open to students and the general public.
State Department of Health and WHSAA guidelines will only allow 100 spectators or 25% of seating capacity, whichever is smaller, to view events.
Absaraka Conference athletic directors have decided to limit visitor and home spectators to family and close friends. There will also be strict protocols for spectators which include wearing face masks at all times, restricted seating areas, no food or beverage in the gymnasium, and the clearing of the gym between contests.
The WHSAA has also instituted sanctions for schools where the new requirements are not followed.
These sanctions can lead to teams being ineligible for post-season play; so it’s imperative that those who do attend events adhere to the requirements.
The winter sports season begins this weekend across the state.
All questions can be directed to the Douglas High School Activities Office at 358-4040. 120820

The Wyoming American Legion Baseball board is opening an investigation into a bat used during the Legion A State Baseball Tournament in Powell last month.
The bat became the source of controversy, especially on social media, after Douglas Cats coach Zach Andrews pointed out its use by the Cody Cubs during the Douglas-Cody game at the state tournament.
State Chairman Cody Beers recently released a statement that said State Board members were unaware of the issues surrounding the Louisville Meta 33-inch, 30-ounce bat that had been decertified by the NCAA and NFHS.
Beers said State officials became aware of the 33-30 Louisville Meta bat from a coach not involved in the Cody-Douglas game during the State A Tournament in Powell, and Beers subsequently removed the bat from the Cody Cubs team, and from further competition in the A state tournament.
Now the Board, the State American Legion Commander, and State American Legion Adjutant are discussing the issues involving this Louisville Meta bat and its impact on the ‘integrity of Wyoming baseball.’
There is a possibility after the review that sanctions or penalties could be imposed. 082020

The Douglas Cats finished their season with an 11-5 loss to the Casper Crush.
At the Wyoming American Legion "A" State Baseball Tournament at Powell, Douglas opened with wins over Riverton and Powell on Saturday and Sunday, then a loss Monday night to the Cody Cubs.
That put the Cats in a big game Tuesday afternoon... a win would put them in the championship game... a loss would put them on the bus.
In the first inning, Casper got their offense started when Cole Douglas drove in a three run homer.
Douglas tied it with three in the top of the third, but Casper answered with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning. The Cats couldn't narrow the gap, and they took the loss to finish the season.
The Cats wrap up the summer 5 games above .500, with a 25-20 record. 080420

Sports programs are done at Sheridan College and Gillette College.
In the face of major cuts in state funding, administrators at the two Northern Wyoming Community College Campuses announced Thursday that their entire athletics programs have been cut. That includes mens and womens basketball and soccer programs at both schools.
The rodeo program is the only program that will continue at both schools, but with a significantly reduced budget.
Cutting athletics will account for a $2.8 million savings in the college district's budget.
The college district also is cutting $500,000 from administration and academic budgets, along with $260,000 from campus police.
The overall budget cuts come to nearly $4 million.
Both Gillette and Sheridan College say that they'll offer academic scholarships to students who were on athletic scholarships.
Coaches will start looking for work elsewhere. 062520

What's the plan for high school football this fall?
That was one of the topics of discussion on Tuesday when the Wyoming High School Activities Association met in person for the first time since the coronavirus shutdown in March.
All six upcoming fall sports — cross country, girls swimming, volleyball, tennis, golf and football — were discussed, and how the various seasons might take place if COVID-19 is still active in Wyoming.
Regarding football, among the ideas considered were a late start to the season and how that might affect postseason seeding, a return to the football power ratings that were done away with in 2009, and playing a shorter season.
The board also discussed playing only conference games in all classifications, and talked about returning state championship games to a home stadium for this year if championship games conflicted with a Wyoming Cowboys game at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie.
Commissioner Ron Laird said there was even the possibility of not having a football season at all.
No final decisions were made at Tuesday's meeting. 060420

Gillette College Women’s Basketball is hanging out the help wanted sign. Head Coach Will "Bunny" Rider announced his resignation to pursue other opportunities on Wednesday.
Under Rider’s leadership over the past 10 years, several Pronghorns have been awarded scholarships to Division 1 programs and another 10 have earned scholarships to Division II institutions.
In 2016, Rider led the Women’s Pronghorns to victory during the Region IX Championship.
Bunny Rider's a Glendo native who coached Douglas LadyCats basketball in the 1980's and early 1990's. Every one of his teams qualified for the state tournament and only twice finished out of the top 3 places. The Bearcats won 3 state titles while playing in 6 title games, 4 of those back to back.
Gillette College will be launching a nationwide search to fill the head coach position this summer, in time for the 2019 – 2020 season. 042919

Wyoming basketball coach Allen Edwards has signed two more recruits to the 2019-20 roster.
They are 6-foot-9, 220-pound junior college big man Tyler Morman of Florida Southwestern College and 6-11, 230-pound Omaha prep product Javier Turner.
Edwards says the two fit a need in terms of size and athletic ability.
Morman helped lead Southwestern Florida to the Elite Eight of the Junior College National Tournament this past season, averaging 4.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Turner averaged 10.4 points and 6.5 rebounds a game at Omaha Northwest High School.
The duo will join previously announced recruits Kenny Foster, junior college guard Greg Milton III and Denver guard Kwane Marble on the Pokes roster. 042619
